For the first season of Splatoon: The Outcasts, while I was working on my final pass of edits for each episode, I took notes about the development of the series and eventually released these a year later as “annotated” versions. This time around, I’m not going to be going so in-depth about each episode; while I planned Season 2 out less than Season 1 overall, a lot of developing Season 1 was also figuring out the tone, scrapping episodes I didn’t need, and deciding how each of the ten episodes I ended up with were actually going to play out. For Season 2, that wasn’t so much the case, since much more was set in stone and I already had my plan for where the season was going to end in mind. Because of this, rather than annotating each episode and re-releasing them one by one like I did in 2019, I’m instead going to go through the season and compile a shorter list of notes and trivia from all ten episodes here. It’s partially because I’ve been taking a bit of a break from the series

André tilted his head side to side, cracking his neck as he finally made it back to his apartment building, having briefly stopped to visit Jolokia on his way home and vent about the situation to her. He hadn’t realized how much he had missed having her to talk to in times like these; it had been making him bottle up his feelings even more than he thought he was. Even if the afternoon wasn’t going as planned, he could at least take solace in the fact that he finally had her back after their relationship had gotten a little more than rocky. He couldn’t stay long, however, as Jolokia had to leave for an appointment not long after he’d dropped in unannounced. Marjani grinned mischievously to herself as she pulled the curtains to her apartment window closed, before crossing the room to the door and double-checking that it was locked. She turned back to her couch, where Nico was waiting for her, smiling back at her as he watched her return to him. She began to tug at the bottom edge of her shirt, teasing her boyfriend silently as she refused to lift it completely. As she reached him, she let go and placed her hands against the back of the couch on either side of him, leaning in close as she tried to control her excited breathing. Just as there was little more than a hair’s breadth between their lips, however, she was startled out of her amorous mood by the sound of a loud knocking on her apartment door, the one and the same she’d just locked. As she pulled away from Nico, they continued to stare into each other’s eyes for a moment. “Wanna pretend we’re not here…?” Marjani whispered. Nico lowered his gaze, his silence

Amber tapped her foot impatiently in the dimly-lit apartment hallway, her arms crossed tightly over her chest. She soon resumed her pacing that she’d ceased only moments before, causing André and Felicity to glance at each other in exasperation simultaneously. Amber stopped right outside the door once more. “Come on!” she grunted under her breath, “What’s taking her?! We’re all gonna be late at this rate!” The trio were waiting for their fourth teammate, Marjani, to join them for their next Turf War match. In an effort to prevent her usual tardiness that had relapsed over the course of the season, they had resorted to picking her up directly from her apartment, leaving her with little to no choice but to interact with them face-to-face despite her clearly wanting to avoid confrontation over her behavior. Felix awoke with a start as his phone, left on his nightstand the night before, began to play his alarm of choice; Split and Splat, a lively chiptune rock song by the Chirpy Chips, one of Inkopolis’ most popular bands. He quickly reached over to turn the alarm off, disconnecting his phone from its charging cable. He swung his legs out from underneath his sheets and off of his bed to stand up. He rubbed the sleep from his eyes and yawned, remembering why he had set the alarm in the first place: The four Outcasts were to be meeting for brunch today at their usual hangout, Café Cardamari, near Inkopolis Plaza, in part simply because it had been a while since they had done anything together, at least outside of their Turf War matches or the increasingly-rare practice. But more importantly was Amber’s desire to speak with Marjani about her time-consuming relationship with her boyfriend, Nico, and how the team required a greater level of commitment from her.

Marjani zipped up her Black Inky Rider jacket, stopping halfway up as the zipper caught on itself momentarily. “Come on…” she grumbled under her breath, trying to coax it the rest of the way up. As she finished, she smiled contentedly with herself. She allowed herself to fall back, sitting down on the side of the bed as she reached over and grabbed her Moto Boots, slipping them onto her feet and tightening each of the clasps. She glanced over to the nightstand next to the bed, before realizing that the last part of her ensemble, her signature Skull Bandana, hadn’t been left there as she thought it was. She began to look around for it, checking the floor before her and the end of the bed to her side, trying to remember where it had ended up the night before. SPLATOON: THE OUTCASTS Season 2, Episode 5: “Ghosts” (Mawari Butai III) Jolokia stopped patiently for a moment as the sliding doors to the studio opened in front of her. She flitted through the doorway briskly, André behind her with a smile on his face. Though it probably would’ve sounded strange to say it out loud, he was always entranced with the way she walked; she was the very image of grace and poise, gliding along wherever she went. She always seemed to live up to her nickname of “the Ghost;” every move she made was almost ephemeral and weightless. Though the lobby of the studio sported a dark palette, the bright lighting above clearly illuminated every inch of it all. André could hear one of the Squid Sisters’ songs, Marie’s serene solo “Tide Goes Out,” playing softly through the speakers overhead.
